16 Mindset Principles Winners use to Win
Or, elite insights to elevate your personal performance and impact...
In a world that values ambition and the relentless pursuit of success (however you define it for you), the top 5% of achievers (winners as they’re so often called) across industries stand out not just for their accomplishments, but for the steadfast maintenance of their unique mindset that propels them forward despite obstacles.
As a radio and television show host, college instructor, corporate trainer and coach for over three decades, I’ve interviewed literally hundreds of movers and shakers across industries, from executives to entertainers, to find out what sets them apart to rise above the competition.
Here’s what I learned:
1. Embrace the Chaos:
Winners know that certainty is an illusion, and the middle of disorder and chaos is where uncommon opportunity lives.
2. Hack Your Habits:
Winners intuitively understand that the quality of their life is linked to the quality of their daily habits used to optimize peak performance.
3. Leverage Micro-Wins:
Winners celebrate each and every win knowing that success is built one small (or big) victory at a time.
4. Fire Up the Feng Shui:
Don’t underestimate how much your work environment’s feng shui shapes and fuels productivity. Choose your surroundings carefully to primarily include that which inspires and moves you toward consistent action.
5. Know When to Destroy:
An achievement mindset intuits when its time to destroy and oust that which no longer serves you to make room for the new that does.
6. Lean Into Uncomfortable Interactions:
Winners embrace uncomfortable interactions and conversations knowing that truth and progress often lie on the other side of any temporary discomfort.
7. Choose Appropriate Transparency:
Winners understand that secrets can be liabilities and insist on transparency (at the right place and at the right time), that strengthens trust and accountability in their personal and professional relationships.
8. Master the Art of NO:
Saying NO is a superpower for those who ruthlessly prioritize their time and energy by declining distractions and to-do’s that do not align with their current goals.
9. Pursue the Power of Silence and Solitude:
In a world full of noise, silence and solitude are golden because top achievers use them as opportunities for introspection, clarity, and strategic thinking.
10. Use Constructive Discontent:
Combatting complacency requires maintaining a healthy dose of constructive discontent by continually striving to new heights while still appreciating what you’ve already achieved.
11. Seek Unconventional Wisdom:
Mediocrity is the enemy of progress. Winners challenge norms, disrupt and rewrite the rules of the game. Winners look for new paths to success, and embrace unconventional wisdom by seeking unusual or untried ideas that sometimes result in unconventional results.
12. Insist on Radical Accountability:
Winners welcome accountability for their actions. They own both their successes and setbacks with integrity and humility, while understanding that excuses are the elixir of the mediocre.
13. Master Adaptation:
Agility, flexibility, and the ability to adapt (in real time) are highly valuable and visible skills in a world where ideas are abundant, but execution is rare.
14. Network with Intention:
Winners know that relationships are non-negotiable currency to cultivate meaningful connections that leverage their network for reciprocal advantage.
15. Own Your Narrative:
Winners are the architects of their own destiny by carefully crafting and policing their narrative (the stories you tell yourself), and refusing to be defined by others' expectations or limitations.
16. Leave a Legacy:
Beyond personal success, altruistic achievers aspire to leave a lasting and positive impact on others and the world by contributing more than they take.
Winners and top achievers understand that pursuing excellence is not only about reaching a destination, but equally about embracing the journey with passion, purpose, and perseverance.
