I could feel a change was coming.
The signs started becoming more and more apparent.
Something new pops up here, something old disappears there.
My first five years living in Florida, I’d walk to this throwback shopping center just a few blocks from my house and the Gulf of Mexico.
I loved the whole old-Florida-vibe of the neighborhood.
I’d work by the window in the local coffee shop marveling at how fortunate I felt living and working there.
One evening as dusk descended and the holiday’s approaching, the burnt out “Z” coupled with sky’s natural tapestry — moved me to shoot what I knew would matter to me later.
And then, as suspected, things changed...
Today, everything looks different there.
Newer, more modern, less character, less nostalgic.
We’ve since moved, but I drive by there periodically and am always flooded with feelings of “how it used to be.”
“It” existing somewhere between retro and relevant.
Kinda like me.
And maybe a little like you too.
“Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end.” — Dan Wilson, “Closing Time” by Semisonic
Endings have always made me a bit wistful.
Whether it’s the end of an era, an adventure, a relationship or a loved one, when something that was so anticipated and so enjoyed is over, it lingers.
It’s been said that the end of one era begins yet another.
So to begin an end means to anticipate the conclusion of events and seasons of life in advance.
This helps mentally prepare for the inevitable.
It’s not morbid, it’s practical.
Because endings are often good things… just in disguise.
Some things inevitably have to end in order for their benefits to become known.
So rather than looking at something being over as an ending, instead look at it as the next beginning of something even better.
Always the optimist, this notion appeals to me much more.
Begin an end where the end result is the beginning of your next new adventure.
Come what may.
